The setting is a ferry on the Sea of Japan. The film closely follows the three-day round trip between Niigata and Otaru, which takes 16 hours each way. The ferry is equipped with a deck with a view of the horizon and a large bath. Passengers sleep in bunk beds or private rooms and spend their time as they please on their way to their destinations.
