Also performing, Eli Paperboy Reed, a gifted young singer/guitarist/harp-blower from Boston, an interpreter of mid-20th gospel, blues and soul with a seven-piece backing band The True Loves; and Dengue Fever is a six-member band from Los Angeles who combine Cambodian pop music with psychedelic rock on their Real World album, Venus On Earth. The Carolina Chocolate Drops are, as their name suggests, from Durham, North Carolina, a trio of young African-American stringband musicians that have come together to play the rich tradition of fiddle and banjo music in Carolina's piedmont.

Malian superstar and business woman Oumou Sangare performs tracks from her album Seya. Yusuf Islam (aka Car Stevens), who returned to recording music in 2006 when he released An Other Cup, plays an acoustic number. Making their television debut is the Portland, Oregon four-piece Hockey, who describe their songs as 'new wave/soul'. Concluding the line up is William Elliot Whitmore, a deep-blues vocalist and guitar/banjo player from Lee County, Iowa.

Joining Jools for the fourth show of the series are Depeche Mode. Now approaching 30 years in the music business, the band make their debut performance on the show performing songs from their album Sounds Of The Universe, as well as a couple of classics. Another Later... debutante, Lily Allen, marks her first appearance in the legendary studio with selections from her chart-topping second album It's Not Me It's You. By contrast, Sonic Youth make a long awaited return to the studio - their first UK television appearance since appearing in series one back in 1992 - to showcase tracks from their new album The Eternal. Raphael Saadiq, whose career includes turns in Tony! Toni! Tone! and Lucy Pearl, will be playing tracks from his newly released fourth album The Way I See It, and blues colossus Taj Mahal will also be in the studio.

Winner of the BBC's Sound of 2009 poll, Blackpool's Little Boots, returns to the show with her band after a solo debut last year, to perform tracks from her forthcoming debut album. Playing solo at the piano is one of the queens of British pop, Annie Lennox. Irish singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lisa Hannigan, who is perhaps best known for her work with Damien Rice, makes her solo Later debut with songs from her album, Sea Sew. From Pennsylvania, Asher Roth makes his UK TV debut with tracks from his album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle.

Chrissie Hynde's The Pretenders return with a couple of numbers from their new album Break Up the Concrete, and Senegalese legend Baaba Maal is also in the studio to play tracks from his latest record, Television. Former Manfred Mann vocalist and now broadcaster and blues musician Paul Jones plays a song from his album Starting All Over Again, and Moscow-born, New York-bred Regina Spektor presents an acoustic tune from her new LP Far. From North London, Golden Silvers make their first Later appearance with tracks from their debut True Romance. Chicago's Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, a nine-piece outfit, eight of whom are sons of jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran, also appear. They've played with Mos Def, Erykah Badu and Maxwell, and are supporting Blur in Hyde Park in summer 2009.

Returning to the show are Irish singer-songwriter Hozier, debuting tracks from his recent Eat Your Young EP, and 2021 Mercury Prize winner Arlo Parks, performing songs from her highly anticipated second album My Soft Machine. They're joined by three artists making their debut on the show: Irish folk singer-songwriter Lisa O'Neill, sharing a track from her fifth album All of This Is Chance, soulful trio Thee Sacred Souls, performing a track from their self-titled EP, and venbee, one of the female artists leading the drum and bass resurgence. Also, Jools chats to legendary music photographer Jill Furmanovsky about the retrospective exhibition of her work being held at Manchester Central Library, which celebrates 50 years of her photography of some of the biggest names in music.

Returning to the show are British vocal powerhouse Jessie Ware, who returns with a couple of numbers from her disco-infused fifth studio album That! Feels Good!, and Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods, fresh from a successful North American tour that included a performance at Coachella. They're joined by three artists making their debuts on the show: Dave Okumu & the 7 Generations, led by the prolific and revered producer and performing a collaboration with ESKA, east London's Olivia Dean, making her TV debut with the song Dive from her forthcoming album Messy, and the Waeve, a musical collaboration between Blur's Graham Coxon and vocalist and musician Rose Elinor Dougall, once a member of The Pipettes. Also, Jools chats to legendary drummer Stewart Copeland, whose forthcoming new album Police Deranged for Orchestra sees him team up with an orchestra to rework some of the biggest hits written and recorded by The Police.

Jools presents a very special episode of Later… starring Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Following the release of their fourth studio album Council Skies, the Mancunian icon performs a full set with his band and a 16-piece string orchestra for an intimate performance of new songs such as Pretty Boy, Open The Door, See What You Find and the title track Council Skies. There are also a few treats from the High Flying Birds and Oasis repertoires including a B-side Noel has never performed live before. Noel also joins Jools for a chat at the piano and we take a quick look back at his performances on the show over the years.
