Seeking new opportunities, he pursues a position in the remote village of Darrowby working for eccentric local vet Siegfried Farnon, who is less than impressed by his early efforts. However, a difficult calving gives James a chance to prove his worth.

Tristan decides that he is outgrowing running the small animal surgery and buys a car to help with errands at the practice, which also provides him with transport for taking Florence, the daughter of Siegfried’s rival, George Pandhi, out on a date.

James checks in at Heston Grange and meets Richard's new farmhand, Butch Fielding. Richard admits he's had the new telephone off the hook because he keeps getting nuisance calls.

Siegfried is back at Mrs Stokes’s Farm to see Hilda the goat, who’s been up to more mischief. Mrs Hall is keen to enter the Drovers' darts competition and scoop the first prize: a fresh turkey.
