Overview

Based on the long-running Archie comic books and characters, The New Archies is a children's television animation. Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Jughead Jones, Reggie Mantle, and the other Riverdale High School students were re-envisioned as pre-teens in junior high school in the DIC Entertainment-produced and NBC-broadcast sitcom. There were fourteen episodes created, all of which aired during the show's first and only season in 1987 and were replayed in 1989. A brief-lived Archie Comics series with the same name and set in the same universe as the animated series was made. From 1991 to1993, reruns of the series were on The Family Channel's Saturday morning lineup, then from 1998 to2002, they aired on Toon Disney. Veronica speaks like a typical valley girl in this series. In earlier animated cartoons and the radio program, she had a southern accent. Eugene, an African American, was cast as the "intelligent" character in place of Dilton Doiley. Amani, Eugene's girlfriend, was also added to the cast. Archie acquired a dog named Red.
