1327, northern Italy. The Franciscan monk William of Baskerville and his apprentice Adso of Melk reach an Benedictine abbey on the Alps to aid in a dispute involving the Order and the Avignon papacy. Up on arrival at the abbey, the two end up involved in a chain of mysterious deaths.
