Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in Discussions to Return for New The Mummy Film From the Ready or Not Directors

After 25 years, The Mummy may rise again — this time with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz potentially back in the spotlight. Ready or Not filmmakers Radio Silence are developing a new entry that could pick up after The Mummy Returns, sparking excitement among fans longing for another blockbuster treasure-hunting adventure.

Last year marked the 25th anniversary of Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy — a milestone that made many feel both nostalgic and eager, if not entirely optimistic, for a return to the film’s swashbuckling universe. It seems Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo known as Radio Silence, felt the same way. According to Deadline, they are now developing a new Mummy film, and even more exciting, franchise icons Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly in talks to return.

Per Deadline, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are attached to direct the project, working from a script by The Family Plan writer David Coggeshall. While story details are tightly guarded, sources speaking to THR suggest that the new film may function as a direct sequel to 2001’s The Mummy Returns, bypassing 2008’s largely dismissed Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. If Fraser and Weisz finalize deals, the expectation is that they would reprise their roles as adventurer Rick O’Connell and his scholar-turned-explorer wife Evelyn.

Radio Silence has already proved its skill at reviving established franchises, having successfully relaunched Scream with the 2022 entry and its sequel, Scream VI. The team is currently working on Ready or Not: Here I Come, starring Samara Weaving, further cementing their genre credentials.

With Fraser experiencing a career resurgence following The Whale and his upcoming film Rental Family, and audiences hungry for a large-scale adventure series to fill the void left by Indiana Jones, the timing for a Mummy revival seems ideal. If all falls into place, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett could be on the brink of bringing the long-dormant franchise back from the dead.
