Gemma and Will's world crumbles when their son dies. Gemma hates herself and develops panic attacks that damage her vision and the audience's. Tormented Will hears his son's voice calling out to him. Gemma advises they accept Paul's offer to stay at his Lake District rural retreat. Gemma, assisted by ex-pharmacist Paul, attempts to treat her panic episodes. Will, unable to hear his son in his home bedroom, antagonizes Paul and leaves. Gemma now relies on Paul, who pretends to care for her. Gemma brings to light love, sadness, and the human condition's weakness. Will and Paul are stuck in a spiral of psychological and physical violence.
