Overview
On her twenty-first birthday, Beatriz married Henrique. Henrique, a naval officer, was often at sea for extended periods of time. Beatriz, who learned everything from plant verticality, took great care of their six children's roots ashore. My father, Jacinto (Hyacinth), dreamed of becoming a bird when he was a child. Beatriz died abruptly one day. My mother also died when I was 17 years old, though she did not die suddenly. On that day, in the aftermath of our mothers' deaths, my father and I met, and our relationship was no longer just that of father and daughter.
