Born in Australia by the Sydney based independent production company cracker jack Productions for both TV1 and the Nine Network, The King was first shown on 20 May 2007 on TV1 for both Foxtel and Austar and became the highest rating drama screened on subscription television in Australia, drawing 511,000 viewers. It aired on the Nine Network on 27. The movie faced criticism from some of the near Kennedy who felt it failed to portray him accurately, feeling he had been portrayed overly broadly in a dark manner from the movie, as well as to what one commentator noticed was a"mad rush to out him, sexually".
