Overview
As a war rages in the Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville, a young girl is captivated by the Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations, which is being read at school by the village's only white man. A war in the South Pacific over a copper mine tore the island of Bougainville apart in 1991. With Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, the reclusive "Popeye" (Hugh Laurie) offers the children of fourteen-year-old Matilda's tiny village an escape. However, on a war-torn island, fiction can have disastrous consequences.
