Overview
Leon Alastray is a fugitive who has been granted asylum by Father John, whom he then accompanies to the village of San Sebastian. The village is abandoned because its timid inhabitants are hiding in the hills from the Indians, who often raid the village and steal all of its goods. The people incorrectly believe that the outlaw is Father John after he is murdered. Alastray initially tries to convince them that he is not a priest, but they do not trust him, and an apparent miracle appears to confirm their suspicions. Eventually, he helps them regain their confidence and defend themselves.
