Overview
Since he was five yrs older, Jose's abuelita educated him to play chess. Now as a member of their Brownsville school group, Jose gets got the opportunity for once in his life and to make use of his skills, finds himself in the spotlight, even as he attempts to help his team make it to the Texas state finals. As their coach, Mr. Alvarado, instructs his students the meaning of perseverance and team effort in the face of adversity, Jose finds his own strengths and uses these to attract his family together.
