Overview
Based on an Eileen Chang novel set in 1930s Shanghai. Manjing (Wu Chien-lien), a young woman from a wealthy family, meets Shujun (Leon Lai), the son of wealthy Nanjing merchants, at a Shanghai factory. Manjing's family (Manlu (Anita Mui) works as a nightclub "hostess") makes Shujun nervous, but they gradually fall in love. It is interrupted by Manjing's hesitation over the step, Shujun's rejection of her family, and finally her family's baroque abuse and slavery of Shujun. After a lengthy separation, Shujun and Manjing reunite, but their pleasure is merely a memory, a sentimental re-imagining of missed chances, missed understandings.
